Profile on Designer Andrew Buttery
Andrew Buttery
set up Tor Design in May 2004, responding
to an increasing
number of freelance projects and his
growing reputation as an outstanding designer.
Leaving a full time graphic design position in a busy
agency, Andy quickly established a loyal client base for
Tor Design in Rossendale and the surrounding area.
From small beginnings, Andy has shaped a very successful
graphic and web design business, which
is continually being discovered by new clients and companies
today.
Andy says:
'Setting up Tor Design wasn't that big a decision for
me as owning and running my own graphic design business
had been my ambition for a long time. I simply love design
and can't wait to get my hands on new projects or meet
new clients. My relationship with clients is very
important - I see them as work colleagues and
enjoy learning about their business. There's a great deal
of variety in the type of industries I work with and design
I do, which means no two days ever really feel the same.
[Andy on expanding Tor Design]
'I've been close to expanding the size and capacity of
Tor Design on a couple of occasions, but have opted away
from this for now. I have a good client list providing
regular work and also have a steady stream of
new clients, many with one-off projects. Everything you
see in Tor Design's portfolio is designed and created
by me and I feel very proud of this. Until I’m ready
to let go of some of the design responsibility I’ll
continue as a sole trader...Tor Design is me! That’s
not ruling out expansion and sharing the design duties
in the future, I do look at CVs, but it’s just not
the right time yet. Good designers aren’t
easy to find and the quality of my work is the
most important consideration – I won’t compromise
on that.’
More about Andy...
Andy was born in Stanley, Wakefield before
moving to Irvine on the Ayrshire coast as a nine year
old. After 5 years his family moved to Ramsbottom in Lancashire
where Andy attended Woodhey High School and Peel Sixth
Form College. Following 12 years employment as an engineer
in the paper making industry, Andy volunteered for redundancy
to return to study at Bolton University (then Bolton Institute).
After gaining a BA with first class honours in
graphic design in 2003, he took up a position
as an assistant graphic designer at Granada Television
working mainly on the graphics for Granada Reports. After
further employment at a busy graphic design studio, he
set up Tor Design in 2004. Andy completed a Master
of Arts Degree in Interior Design in 2007 after
18months intensive study during his busy workload. He
also lectures at Bolton University when
work load allows.
His interests are broad, including architecture,
garden design, photography, reading and
travel, but Andy’s other major passion is running.
